Recovery Relationships Team Effort By admin Posted on February 1, 2018 3 min read 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr I just returned from the last professional car race of the season. Gosh, no more racing for a while! I look forward to the weekends and car racing, but I will have to be content with American football until racing resumes. You’re probably thinking, “What’s the big deal about racing? A bunch of cars go fast around a track.” But it’s so much more than that! It’s a big team effort: from the pit crews who assemble cars and change four tires, fill up the gas tank and make adjustments in less than fifteen seconds, to the spotters who keep a lookout by watching the race from above and communicating wrecks or other hazards to drivers. It’s about a team working together, not only to get across the finish line first but also keep its driver safe. My recovery is like that—a team effort. And it has put me in the winner’s circle now for over fifteen years. Hey, if it were just a diet, then car racing would just be cars going fast around a track, and I could have lost 20 pounds (9 kg) in 1967 and not needed OA twenty-five years and 100 pounds (45 kg) later. I need people. I need to hear my story out of others’ mouths, and I need to extend my hand to the still-suffering compulsive overeater if I want to keep what I’ve got. You’re my team! You help me build my recovery, and you watch over me with your phone calls. I take the Steps with another compulsive overeater, use the OA Tools daily to the best of my ability, and win recovery. But I have to put abstinence first “ab-soul-utely.” It’s not a choice anymore. I’ve tried the other stuff, and believe me, this works for the long haul. I’m staying! — Gerri H., Titusville, Florida USA
