Service Tools & Concepts Easy Service Commitments By admin Posted on January 1, 2018 3 min read 1 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr Service is one of the ways I stay in recovery and out of relapse. When I came back to program last April, I knew that taking continuous action was the only way to keep my program moving forward. The first thing I did was commit to service at the group level because that’s key to getting me to a regular meeting. I started by being a treasurer because it was an easy way to transition into a new meeting, and I didn’t have to stress about being on time. Just recently, I started doing a flexible and easy service. I post my intergroup’s OA website address in free online community classified forums. Many local areas have these forums available. I post an OA description once a week. I use words found in OA’s Let People Know About Your Meeting document, which is free to download from oa.org. This is what I write: “Do you suspect food rules your life? Overeaters Anonymous may be your answer. This is not a diet club. OA is a Fellowship of people recovering from compulsive overeating. OA offers mutual support and a helpful plan of action. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop eating compulsively. There are no dues, fees, or weigh-ins. To find a meeting in your neighborhood, visit [my intergroup’s website] or oa.org.” This is an easy way to be of service. If you are in relapse and can’t find a way out, doing service may just give you a boost of confidence. It certainly helps me feel like I’m on the right track. I’m certain that doing service (and using the other Tools often) is the reason I’ve been gifted with more than ten months of abstinence, as well as physical, spiritual, and emotional recovery.
