Sponsoring Tools & Concepts Great Big Hurdle By admin Posted on December 1, 2019 3 min read 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr I am grateful for my wonderful sponsor—that’s what this is about. But first, I have to point out that we are not all alike, and the longer we are in OA the less alike we become. What is so wonderful about my sponsor is that she is a good listener. It is very hard to be a sponsor who really only listens! She is “a loving witness” (The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous, Second Edition, p. 42) like our literature says. I’ve leveled with her about some things that you would really expect to alarm a sponsor. In the beginning, it is good to remember that sponsors can be easily alarmed, especially if they think your ideas might be dangerous to their abstinence if they tried them! I tell my sponsor what is going on with me every day, even things that probably go against what is okay with her in her life. I have this great luxury of having a time that works for both my sponsor and me every day, and I easily can afford to telephone her every day. I don’t know how I would adjust to less frequent committing to and leveling with her. Part of why she is such a good sponsor is that she trusts the program process and what time will do to bring me around to something closer to good sense. Now, I know that surrendering accountability to a sponsor is a great big hurdle when starting out in the program. In order to start, I had to be desperate to stop doing the things with food, and that was a few sponsors ago! — Anonymous
