Abstinent Now

I am writing to echo sentiments from “Print Preference.” I came to OA in 1986 and have abstained from sugar since then and have been maintaining a 100-pound (45-kg) weight loss. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for the gift of OA, for the gift of a life free from food obsession and bondage, and for a life in a healthy body size.

I have kept a subscription to Lifeline for as long as I can remember. I can safely say that our little magazine has saved my abstinence, especially when traveling. In addition to portability, I enjoy knowing that most stories I’m reading were written by recovering members who are abstinent now. Today, I am not the only person surrendering my food to God. Today, I am not the only person not eating everything I want all day and night (though I’m grateful to say that much of the “want to” has been removed). I benefit from all of OA’s books as well, but Lifeline stories are in the now, the only time I have to be abstinent.

OA has literally saved my life. Lifeline has played a large part in keeping my head in the game and in the knowledge that I am not alone today.
